The Sahara Centre

overview

overview

The Sahara Centre project involved a comprehensive digital transformation of the organization’s online presence. Beyond a simple visual refresh, the initiative focused on restructuring how research and case study data is accessed and utilized by the public. By transitioning from a static information portal to a high-utility research hub, the platform now serves as a critical resource for organizational transparency and knowledge dissemination.

My Role

My Role

As the Experience Designer & Visual Developer, I was responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of the project, including:

  • Strategic Architecture: Restructuring the site’s information architecture to prioritize user discoverability.

  • Visual & Functional Design: Executing the redesign using WordPress and Elementor to achieve a modern, minimalist, and functional aesthetic.

  • Technical Implementation: Building a dedicated, searchable research database for toolkit and case study resources.

  • Platform Governance: Transitioning into a long-term maintenance lead to oversee security protocols, performance optimization, and content strategy.

Problem Statement

Problem Statement

The Sahara Centre’s legacy platform suffered from disjointed information architecture and a lack of functional tools for resource retrieval. Users, typically researchers, partners, and stakeholders, struggled to locate specific case studies or toolkits, leading to low engagement and underutilized intellectual assets. The site failed to mirror the professional caliber of the organization’s work.

The Goal

The Goal

The primary objective was to modernize the digital footprint to improve user engagement and accessibility. Specifically, the mandate was to:

  • Centralize Knowledge: Implement a robust, database-driven system for hosting and downloading research materials.

  • Enhance Usability: Apply an intuitive interface that reduces cognitive load and directs users toward high-value content.

  • Drive Sustainability: Ensure the platform could support continuous content growth without sacrificing performance or security.

dESIGN Framework

dESIGN Framework

Guided by the principle that usability holds priority over aesthetics, the design framework focused on:

  • Clean Typography & Whitespace: Reducing visual clutter to highlight the research content.

  • Modular Component Design: Leveraging Elementor’s flexibility to create consistent, reusable design elements for future content expansion.

  • Data-First Architecture: Utilizing custom post types and taxonomies to ensure that the research database is scalable, searchable, and filterable.

Design Planning & Thought Process

Design Planning & Thought Process

My process was anchored in a methodical, user-centered approach:

  • Discovery: Audited existing content to identify friction points in the user journey.

  • Architecture: Mapped out a new site taxonomy that categorized resources by topic, date, and document type to simplify navigation.

  • Prototype & Iteration: Focused on the "Research Database" functionality, ensuring that the interface provided immediate access to download links for case studies and toolkits.

  • Performance Optimization: Prioritized lean code and efficient media handling to maintain fast load times, even with a growing library of high-resolution PDF resources.

Challenges

Challenges

  • Data Migration & Structuring: Organizing a large repository of legacy documents into a structured, searchable format required a significant shift in content strategy and database setup.

  • Balancing Sophistication and Simplicity: Ensuring the platform felt professional and "intellectually deep" while maintaining the extreme minimalism necessary for effective data retrieval.

  • Maintenance Continuity: Designing a system that remained secure and performant after the launch, ensuring that the client could manage ongoing updates without compromising the site's structural integrity.

Outcome

Outcome

The project resulted in a fully functional, modernized research hub that significantly improved the organization’s digital delivery:

  • Increased Resource Utilization: The implementation of a searchable research database allowed users to access toolkits and case studies with minimal friction.

  • Operational Excellence: The platform now provides a stable, secure, and scalable foundation for all future digital communication.

  • Sustainable Growth: Through the maintenance phase, the site continues to perform optimally, effectively serving as an evolving digital repository for The Sahara Centre’s critical work.
